An unorthodox way to educate practitioners and students about avian hematology and histopathology is now availableas a “Memory” game, also known as “Concentration” or “Pairs”. The game consists of 32 pairs of brilliant photographs of avian histopathologic and hematologic cases and is accompanied by an instructional poster and leaflet. Image 1-20 gives an overview over the variety of avian bloodcells in physiologic and pathologic morphology. Image 21-32 summarizes findings from psittacine patients frequently associated with four viral diseases: Circovirus, Adenovirus, Polyomavirus and Proventricular Dilatation Disease (pdd), the latter suspected to be of viral origin.

The idea was conceived by Dr.med. vet.Helene Pendl (PendlLab, www.pendllab.com) in response to the challenge of funding the biannual Helga Gerlach Award for Excellence in Avian Veterinary Science from the European Committee of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (EAAV).
